Bio Shift Shapes
Bio Shift Shapes explores the process of altering dated, discarded garments into multifunctional objects/artifacts. This series responds to the issues of rising coastal tides, overflowing landfills, and the alarming rise of nanoplastics in the world ocean. Synthetic clothing destined for a landfill is reconfigured and made into art objects used to combat the effects of climate change. Their functions range from aesthetic sculptures to functional sandbags, to memorials, and back for use as the original clothing item. The artwork is designed to reconvert to the original garment and, if desired, be worn again.
The work is based on the premise that the more functions and roles these garments have within the community, the more they will ultimately extend their lifecycle, keeping them out of the consumer waste stream. This series honors the concept of biomimicry coined by Janine Benyus, which describes innovations inspired by nature.
